Off-grid life forces a blunt question: keep feeding a generator, or invest in panels and batteries that harvest free photons? The wrong answer shows up every month at the fuel pump—and every morning at 6 a.m. when the neighbor's cabin still hears your exhaust.

CAPEX vs. OPEX: two different pain curves

A portable or standby generator wins on upfront price. A modest diesel set plus transfer switch can look like pocket change next to a full solar-battery-inverter install. But generators trade low CAPEX for relentless OPEX:

Match daily kWh first (sum loads or read your monitor), then decide autonomy days for batteries. Undersized solar keeps the generator relevant; oversized solar without enough storage still invites evening fuel burns.
